From our original location at the Union Pacific Depot in downtown SLC, to the “Estación de Bomberos” No.8 on 1300 East near the University of Utah
Serving your favorite Mexican comfort food, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, margaritas, brews and more.
Located at the Historic “Estación de Bomberos” No.8, serving your favorite Mexican comfort food, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, margaritas, brews and more.
The Rio Grande Cafe first opened its doors in 1981 and has been locally owned and operated since that day. For years the nostalgic landmark cafe was located in the historic Rio Grande Train Depot, initially built in 1910 for the Denver Rio Grande and Western Railroad service. The cafe was the original "air-conditioned" coffee shop, a marketable novelty, and is tributed in the savvy form of a pink neon sign that is perched, to this day, above the entryway. In December of 2020, we moved to a new home at the historic fire station "No8" on 1300 East in Salt Lake City, but we are still serving the exact same Mexican comfort food classics that you have loved since we opened in 1981… the only thing that has changed is our location.
Rio Grande Cafe's new interior reflects the era of enjoying an immaculately restored classic turn-of-the-century Fire Station, paying tribute to its storied past. The famous art installation of the 'taco lady' has been relocated and hangs in the dining room upstairs, alongside the vintage neon and other train station ephemera. We are excited to welcome back our loyal customers, friends, and family who have enjoyed the laid-back cafe serving up Mexican comfort food as one of Salt Lake's iconic restaurants for years.
